Invisalign: Answering Your Frequently Asked Questions
Over the last two and a half decades, the world has come to love Invisalign. This elegant alternative to fixed braces has discreetly perfected the smiles of millions.
If you’re considering Invisalign, you’ll naturally have a few questions. Because teeth straightening treatments can take many months or even years, they are a big commitment. It’s essential to understand how your treatment will work around your lifestyle.
How will your Invisalign aligner impact your life? Can you sleep while wearing it? What happens if you lose it?
We’ll answer all these questions and more in this quick guide to Invisalign.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign uses a series of custom-made plastic aligners to apply pressure to your teeth. This constant gentle force gradually moves your teeth. Every aligner in the series is slightly different, and your treatment will be taken a step further.
The theory is similar to that of other orthodontic treatments, but Invisalign aligners are discreet and removable, making them more convenient.
What Are the Benefits of Invisalign?
One of the leading reasons people choose to straighten their teeth is to improve the appearance of their smiles. Straighter teeth look better and can help you improve your confidence.
Teeth straightening also has several health benefits. You can enjoy a decreased risk of tooth decay and gum disease, an improved ability to chew and speak, and better jaw health.
Invisalign also has its benefits over fixed braces. Clear aligners are subtle and more comfortable compared to metal braces. Because aligners are removable, you won’t need to avoid certain foods.
Is Invisalign Really Invisible?
Unfortunately, aligners are not totally invisible. But Invisalign does come close. Every aligner is made from a translucent material shaped to your teeth, making this treatment one of the more subtle options available.
Can I Sleep Wearing Invisalign?
Yes! You can sleep in with your aligner—in fact, we suggest you do! Your treatment will continue working while you’re sleeping.
Your aligner is not only comfortable for near-constant wear, but it’s safe to sleep while wearing it.
What Happens If I Forget to Wear My Aligner?
You need to wear your aligner almost all of the time. We recommend aiming for 22 hours of wear each day.
Ideally, the only times you’ll take your aligner out are when you’re eating, drinking, brushing your teeth, or flossing.
If you forget to wear your aligner, put it back in as soon as possible. If you don’t wear your aligner enough, your treatment will take longer. Leaving your aligner out too much could also undo any of the progress you’ve achieved so far.
How Do I Clean My Aligner?
Because your aligner is pressed against your teeth all day and night, it can trap bacteria and increase the potential for cavities. We recommend cleaning your aligner at least twice a day, at the same time as you brush your teeth.
Aligner cleaning products are available, but you can also use a soft toothbrush (use a separate brush for your teeth!) and soap. Rinse the aligner under warm water and thoroughly clean every surface.
What Happens If I Damage Or Lose an Aligner?
Although we always recommend wearing your aligners in the order you receive them, it’s always worth keeping the last one.
Invisalign aligners are durable, but accidents can happen. If you break or lose your aligner, contact us immediately, and we’ll advise on the next steps. If you’ve recently switched, we may suggest wearing your last aligner, as this will maintain the progress until we can give you a replacement.
How Long Will My Treatment Take?
Every treatment is unique, but depending on the severity of your case, Invisalign typically takes six months to two years.
When you visit us for your initial consultation, we’ll take digital scans of your teeth and jaws and create a custom treatment plan. This will tell us how long you can expect to wear your aligners.
