What Happens at a Hygiene Appointment?

At your appointment, we’ll thoroughly assess your teeth, gums and surrounding soft tissue. We’ll primarily look for signs of gum disease, plaque build-up, decay and other symptoms that suggest further treatment is required.

We’ll discuss our findings with you and talk you through which treatments could benefit you the most. We might perform some treatments during your appointment, or we might book you to see a dentist.

As standard, we provide our patients with a scale and polish to break away plaque and tartar build-up to prevent gum disease and decay in the future. Once the appointment is over, you’ll leave our clinic with the ultimate, beyond fresh feeling.

Hygiene FAQs

Do I need a hygiene appointment?
If you think you might have some signs of decay or gum disease, you must book an appointment with us. Symptoms of decay include sensitivity, staining, visible hole in your teeth or pain when you bite down. Symptoms of gum disease include swelling, redness, soreness, tenderness and receding gums. We offer treatments to help you get your oral health back on track and prevent further problems from occurring.
What’s the best way to have good oral hygiene?
There are everyday things like brushing, flossing and using mouthwash daily. Other things you should consider to keep your smile fresh is making sure you visit your dentist regularly, not smoking, avoiding acidic or dark drinks, limiting sugary foods and using a toothpaste containing fluoride. Our team is always pleased to pass on bespoke tips and advice.
What happens if I don’t get bad breath treated?
Bad breath can be a sign that something’s wrong elsewhere in your mouth, like an infection. It could also point to inflammation in the sinuses, throat or nose. It could even be a sign of some metabolic problems or related to some cancers’ symptoms.
How often should I visit a hygienist?
You should see your hygienist at least twice a year. You can make your appointment with us by calling our clinic today. Visiting a hygienist twice a year means that any issues like gum disease, decay, bad breath, cavities and more can be spotted and acted upon before they escalate.
Why do I need to floss?
Many people think that flossing is encouraged because it removes food from in between your teeth. This is true in part, but flossing is much more than simply removing food. Food particles that get stuck between your teeth can cause plaque build-up – plaque build-up can lead to gum disease, leading to more severe periodontitis. So, in short, flossing keeps your gums healthy and is much more preventative and essential than many realise.
